Inequity Persists - Let’s Reflect

Inequity in #education and #educationindustry persists because we are surrounded by people that look like us. Don't believe me? Look at the "People Also Viewed" section.

Now, go find people that don't look like you. For some, the contrast will be very clear, which should also be very unsettling. It's a pattern we see, endlessly, at trade shows, industry conferences, and in leadership meetings.

Regarding LinkedIn, I don't know the algorithms driving 'People Also Viewed' feeds, but I'm smart enough to recognize a pattern - and a problem - when I see it.

The problem isn't simply that this exists; it is a problem because of how easily we ignore such patterns. When it comes to equity and being culturally competent in our work, that which makes us comfortable makes us lazy. We can't afford that in education, now or ever.

You might argue that this feed, those conference panels... they are selected by someone else so it's out of your control. That's bunk, because you can articulate your expectation and call out these patterns. You can hire better and differently. You can set the tone for your teams.

So I'm asking you to help me change up my feed and yours. And together, let's keep thinking and talking about the patterns we are unconsciously supporting.
