Practical Advice for Product Demos

Here's a meal-time metaphor for serving up a great demo, since many of us will be eating our way through the holiday season.

**Set the table**
A good meal deserves a toast - an introductory statement that reminds people why you're all together. Don't be too quick to dig into a demo. Make sure everyone knows what to expect. Even with limited time, take the time to set the table.

**Ask before serving seconds (or thirds)**
My wife is famous for forcing food on guests (gets it from her grandmother). If you pile on too much too fast, your prospect will not only lose their appetite, they'll forget what they loved most about your meal.

**Don't read the menu while they're eating**
Imagine if, while you're chewing carrots, I said, "You're now eating carrots. Which are orange. And are vegetables." This is my way of saying, don't read the words on your slide deck. Just don't.

One sign of a good meal is when people linger to talk and maybe revisit some of their favorite dishes.

Same for a demo...when it's done well, your guests won't be in a hurry to leave.

Now, please pass the dessert.
